Field Trip to Stanford Arizona Garden

There are many fascinating sights on the Stanford University campus, but a relatively hidden spot is the Stanford Arizona Garden. It is located on the south side of the mausoleum off Quarry Road between Campus Drive and Arboretum Road. It was designed for Jane and Leland Stanford by landscape architect Rudolf Ulrich between 1881 and 1883. After suffering some neglect for a while, it had been neglected from the 1920's until recently. For several years, the Stanford grounds keeping staff and local cacti enthusiasts (including members of our club) have been restoring the garden to its former glory.

The Arizona Garden has a wide selection of cacti and succulents, something that everyone will surely appreciate. If you have considered getting rid of your lawn, it will provide plenty of inspiration for your project!

We encourage carpooling. The closest parking is near the Cantor Arts center, or the parking garage by the McMurtry Art building. Please allow enough time for parking and walking to the garden. Please see the directions below for walking directions to the garden and parking locations. Members should arrive at the garden by 12:30pm. Our guide will be Julie Cain, the Historic Preservation Planner for Heritage Services at Stanford University. She will lead a tour of the garden starting at 12:45pm.

Note: If you need help with carpooling, either to offer a ride or to ask for a ride, email membership@csssj.org and I will do my best to match people up.
